Take an underground tour of ancient St. John’s Hospital

In the basement of the ancient St. John’s Hospital, one of the most historic and fascinating in Rome, lies an archaeological treasure still little known to the general public.

Recent excavations, conducted between 2018 and 2020, have revealed a fascinating window into the past: the vestiges of elegant imperial dwellings, remains of the domus of Annio Vero, father of Domizia Lucilla and grandfather of Marcus Aurelius, and the luxurious residence of Licinius Sura, a leading general in the service of Emperor Trajan. Walking through these fascinating excavations, you will immerse yourself in a world of extraordinary beauty and history.

Mosaics, such as that of the Four Seasons, tell stories of a bygone era, while a large cistern, tanks, floors, and frescoes tell of the daily life of Roman nobles. Warehouses, sarcophagi are also visible.

But that’s not all: another wonder will be available just for you It is the medieval apothecary’s shop, the ancient pharmacy of the Hospital, which holds secrets and relics from a past of alchemy and science.
